![]() ![]() and I was a tabletop game master with 6 regular players each week for early D&D games in the 1970s. We will see how this one pans out but very few have pulled me on to book 2 in their series. but you have to understand the mechanics of the system in the book to do this effectively. I tend to scan it in a speed read way they way I would in a computer game. Billiau does deal with this in a clever and innovative way but it is still a part of game lit. the main problem with many of this sort of book is the burden of the game engine described in the books ie "you have leveled" and the combat spam that the game puts on the screen of the player. BilliauĪbout 1/2 through this first of his series. One of the best so far of the 7 or 8 I have tried is PrimeVerse: Forced Login: A GameLit / LitRPG Adventure by R.K. ![]() One could easily see this being adapted into a screenplay. There was just enough to let you know that Westworth has done his research but not so much that it disrupted the flow of the narrative. Westworth didn’t cram every paragraph with soldierly lingo like some writers in this genre do. I know nothing about military operations, but the details certainly felt authentic. Once I started reading, the pages turned quickly and willingly. The dialogue is snappy, the characters are sharply developed, and the plot moves effortlessly forward. However, I do like good writing, and First Contract has plenty of that. I don’t particularly care for war stories, espionage, or even mystery. Review by Ian Sutherland, author of Invasion of Privacy oOo First off, I have to say that this is not my genre of choice. ![]() Looking forward to the full-length novels. ![]() The author makes no apologies for Stoner’s pragmatic attitude towards the elimination of his targets, and the result is an solid well thought through action thriller, intelligently handled. ![]() It’s intelligently written, with excellent characterisation, sharp wit and punchy back-n-forth dialogue. Washington was, by most accounts, the leading figure in the black community between 18. One way to understand The Souls of Black Folk is as a response to the legacy of an earlier black American leader, Booker T. By drawing on such a range of disciplines, Du Bois is able to offer his readers different lenses for viewing one central problem: the devastating effects that living in segregation had had on the souls and consciousness of black people. The Souls of Black Folk, read as a single work, is a unique admixture of history, social documentary, autobiography and anthropological fieldwork. The book contains a collection of Du Bois’s essays, several of which had been previously published in the Atlantic Monthly magazine in the years leading up to the book’s launch. The Souls of Black Folk, arguably Du Bois’s most famous and enduring book, was first published in 1903 while he was teaching at Atlanta University. ![]() (Wikimedia Commons) Du Bois was the first African-American to earn a doctorate from Harvard. Perhaps I should have stopped questing for Jack's films then and there, but within the last week I watched three more of them. It's a neat curio, but felt "off," just as I find his television programs don't entirely click with me. On the other hand, Buck Benny Rides Again was about as close as a movie could come to Jack's radio program, with almost every cast member and even an audio-only Fred Allen putting in appearances and yet, Buck Benny didn't quite satisfy me. In Heavy, Laymon writes eloquently and honestly about growing up a hard-headed black son to a complicated and brilliant black mother in Jackson, Mississippi. Laymon invites us to consider the consequences of growing up in a nation wholly obsessed with progress yet wholly disinterested in the messy work of reckoning with where we’ve been. In his essays, personal stories combine with piercing intellect to reflect both on the state of American society and on his experiences with abuse, which conjure conflicted feelings of shame, joy, confusion and humiliation. In this powerful and provocative memoir, genre-bending essayist and novelist Kiese Laymon explores what the weight of a lifetime of secrets, lies, and deception does to a black body, a black family, and a nation teetering on the brink of moral collapse.
